Undergraduate courses

Staff of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology present lectures in the following undergraduate courses, during the first, second or third years:

  • Bachelor of Science
  • Bachelor of Biomedical Science
  • Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery
  • Bachelor of Optometry
  • Bachelor of Dental Science

The requirements for a major in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in 2009 are:

For students who have never completed Biochemistry and Molecular Biology subjects at 3rd-year level:

  • BCMB300## Advanced Techniques in Molecular Science
  • PLUS at least one of

  • BCMB30001 Protein Structure and Function
  • BCMB30002 Functional Genomics and Bioinformatics
The remainder of the 50 points to be made up of choices from:
  • BCMB30001 Protein Structure and Function
  • BCMB30002 Functional Genomics and Bioinformatics
  • BCMB30003 Molecular Aspects of Cell Biology
  • BCMB30004 Cell Signalling and Neurochemistry
  • BCMB30005 Biochemistry of Metabolism and Nutrition

For students who have completed Biochemistry and Molecular Biology subjects at 3rd-year level during or before 2008:

The pre-2009 requirement of one compulsory 3rd-year practical subject for a major in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology still stands. It can be either of the pre-2009 subjects 521321 Gene Technology and Protein Expression or 521322 Protein Biochemistry and Proteomics, OR the 2009 subject BCMB300## Advanced Techniques in Molecular Science. The remainder of the 50 points can be made up of any combination of pre-2009 subjects and 2009 subjects.

NOTE:
  • If a student finds that these pathways to a Major in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology are not possible in 2009 due to clashes with other subjects, they should contact Associate Professor Ian van Driel or Associate Professor Paul Gooley, who will work with individual students to try and ensure successful completion of the Major.
  • It is highly recommended that students majoring in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology complete both BCMB30002 Functional Genomics and Bioinformatics and BCMB30001 Protein Structure and Function, or the equivalent pre-2009 subjects, as this will provide the best grounding in the discipline.
Several awards, prizes and scholarships are available for students taking subjects in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
