Privately owned computers
No privately owned computers can be connected to the network without prior approval
from the head of department.
Download and copy the approval form and submit to the head of department for signing.
The privately owned computer must:
- have all of the latest security patches from Microsoft, Apple or Linux
- have an up-to-date virus protection program (Note: The University of Melbourne currently use Mcafee antivirus software)
As the owner of the computer, you must:
- Provide a CAT6 ethernet cable for connection of the laptop to the network
- Abide by all university regulations in relation to the use of the university network

Provide a method of securing the computer (i.e. Kensington lock).
Note: Regarding privately owned computers, Biochem IT staff members:
- DO NOT install software
- DO NOT fix software or hardware faults
- DO assist with connection to the local network after approval from the head of department
- DO assist with connection to departmental printers.
